Dramatic win in Metro Cup

Metro Cup – Old Belvedere 34 Old Wesley 35
The 2nds (J1s) delivered the performance of the weekend and of their season with a highly entertaining and dramatic win over Old Belvedere in the Metro Cup at Anglesea Rd.  The opposition may be a Division 1A club and their J1 team 3rd in the league division above us but this did not phase an Old Wesley side full of confidence and enthusiasm.
Old Wesley led 11-3 after the first quarter thanks to a try and two penalties from Ken McLaughlin before Old Belvedere got back to 10-11 by half time. Wesley extended their lead with a great solo run by Wesley Deverell who baffled three defenders to score under the post.  The opposition responded with a try before Ray Wilson crossed for a converted try opening up a 13 point lead. But with 15 minutes to go the hosts struck twice with two converted tries to take a one point lead.  Then with just 2 minutes on the clock it looked like another so near day for Old Wesley when they leaked another try to trail by six points.  But this team was not prepared to give up. In the last play of the game good pick and drive play brought the game into the opposition 22 where Colin Wallace found a huge gap in the opposition defence to score under the posts.  McLaughlin stepped up to kick the straightforward but huge pressure conversion.
Old Wesley now play Seapoint in the quarter final of the competition
